Sony HX5 - Video

Short breakdown of my tests so far.
  • The simple 720p mode records roughly in the high 80% of the maximum possible resolution.

original video screen grab (full size 720x1280)
To better compare the quality as you see them on the big screen TV all clips have been resized with maximum quality to full HD resolution.

The crops are done without any re compression.
Remember, Google re compresses all pictures, so to see the true quality, click on each. The size is the same (400 x 400 pixel).

    720 MP4 (resized from 1280 x 720 to 1920 x 1080)

    1080 MP4 (resized from 1440 x 1080 to 1920 x 1080)

    1080 AVCHD (resized from 1440 x 1080 to 1920 x 1080)

    1080 AVCHD (original resolution 1920 x 1080)

  • The MP4 mode has a higher brightness in low light situations
  • The MP4 mode has less compression artifacts then the ACVHD mode (you need to get pretty close to a 42" screen to see them actually around small details)
  • The Active Mode is an awesome stabilisation if you move with the camera on foot or vehicle
  • I see no visible improvement comparing the 1440x1080 resolution in MP4 to the 1920x1080 resolution in AVCHD (run several tests with small print and compared the vide0o clips and the still captures on a 42" full HD screen and a computer monitor.)
  • Put the HX5 in IAuto and you are set for whatever comes your way, shutter for foto or movie button for video, just point and click.
  • The video clip can be stopped with the movie button or the shutter button.
  • Your fingers easily cover the microphones or your thumb covers the speaker.
  • You need a wind filter if there is air movement

  1. I use avchd all the time because when I connect it directly to my HDTV, the smoothness of the video is unreal. It's like watching 24p bluray on a Plasma.

  2. This is a test of a static image. It has nothing to do with real world video which contains movement. AVCHD is simply much better with less compression artifacts.

I agree that resolution is not much better after deinterlace

  3. well, I just can tell you what I saw on my 42" Toshiba full HD TV and for me MP4 looked a bit better around the letters, more smooth while AVCHD had lots of tiny ever changing compression artifacts around the lettering.
I have the shmothening and all post processing disabled on my TV.
and Yes you are right the screen shots are not optimal to compare but that is why I write what I see and conclude also
